Climate-neutral hotel with sea view spa to open in Sweden

The climate-neutral hotel will run on 100 per cent renewable electricity generated from hydropower
Hotel operator Scandic Hotels has announced plans to create a climate-neutral hotel in the northern Swedish city of Sundsvall in 2024. The new 210-room location – called Scandic Sundsvall Central – is the product of a long-term lease agreement signed between Scandic and Sweden-based construction and development company Skanska.
Once complete, the hotel will be located in the city’s downtown harbour area and be home to a luxury spa and wellness facility featuring sweeping views of the Bothnian Sea.
The building’s frame, facade and interior will be made of wood, meeting the requirements for the high-ranking LEED Gold environmental certification. The hotel will also be certified according to the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
With its choice of energy-efficient materials and solar panels on the roof, the hotel will maintain a high energy standard and be 100 per cent climate-neutral during its lifetime.
The hotel will also run on 100 per cent renewable electricity generated through hydropower and all operations will have as small an impact as possible on the environment.
Additional hotel facilities will include a gym, meeting rooms, a cosy restaurant and a bar area.
“Scandic’s new hotel in Sundsvall will be a modern and attractive meeting place ideally located in an exciting area where we can see a growing demand for hotel accommodations,” said Peter Jangbratt, head of Scandic Hotels Sweden.
Scandic already operates two hotels in Sundsvall, with a total of 312 rooms.
“We’ve been developing the hotel together with Skanska for the past two years and it feels extremely positive to be further strengthening our hotel offering in the city.”
Joakim Åkesson, regional manager at Skanska Sverige, added: “It’s gratifying to now have Scandic as a tenant – a company that shares our values in terms of sustainability and with which we have worked closely in other projects.”
