Nuffield Health has reopened the historic Barbican health club in London, as part of ambitious plans to establish its first wellness "health campus" in the UK.

Nuffield Health Barbican – the 114th health club in the health charity's portfolio – features a high-end fitness offering, including a fully refurbished pool, running track, NuCycle studio, athletic zone with athletic track and a large gym floor fully refitted in partnership with Technogym to include the Skill Line range and functional zone.

In addition, it offers an on-site medical centre, with physiotherapy, private GP services and access to things such as emotional wellbeing therapy, physiotherapy, health assessments, pathology, travel consultations, cognitive behavioural therapy and counselling.

The club is the first of two large projects to open as part of Nuffield's plans to create a holistic health and wellbeing offer, as the Barbican club will be joined by Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in early 2022, with the new hospital being less than 500m away from the club.

"The two sites will combine to create our first health campus to support all health and wellbeing needs," Nuffield said.

Martin Friend, chief operating officer, said: "[The Barbican] is the largest Medical Centre in our portfolio.

"With our newest hospital around the corner and Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew's opening in January, we can truly provide total healthcare support for the residents and workforces in this part of the City, to both get well and stay well."

The club will deliver a digital customer journey via the Nuffield app.

Nuffield acquired the lease for the historic Barbican health club site in March this year from Virgin Active.

Located on Aldersgate Road, the property has been operated as a health club since the 1980s, when it first opened as The Barbican Health and Fitness Centre – one of the first health clubs in the UK.

Thanks to being developed by industry entrepreneur David Giampaolo – and its association with Diana, Princess of Wales, who opened the club – the club has become one of the iconic properties in the UK heath and fitness industry.

Since its launch, the site has operated under a number of owners and brands – including Healthtrack and Holmes Place.

The Barbican opening is part of a larger strategy that Nuffield is looking to implement for its London operations.
