Bristol based fabrication specialists Fineline have recently been commissioned by live brand event producers Wave Marketing and Communications Ltd to design and build a 16ft wide classic Chevrolet scenic front.

The finished article was the centrepiece of a Motorola corporate event at the Bar Moto in the garden of the Mauna Lani Resort on Hawaii's Big Island.

Fineline could have constructed the Chevy in one piece but it had to be designed to split into elements small enough to be fitted into 747 airfreight containers. It also had to be completed in just two weeks to make the deadline...

Once a suitable graphics file was located, this was scaled up to the required size in Mayka 5-axis CAM software. The company then worked out how to break it down for shipping.

Once formed, the front - made from 6ft x 8ft x 4ft x 2ft standard density polystyrene blocks and weighing about 100kg - was then spray painted Candy Red with silver flecks to mimic the model's original classic colour. This process was completed in a car spray booth with cellulose paint after being coated with polyester body filler and plaster.

Fineline also fitted it out with a fully working set of headlights and side lights, using 22W/12V automotive brake light bulbs, complete with inbuilt 110V transformer. The headlights were made from 40mm thick acrylic material.

On completion, the Chevy front was flown from Fineline's base in Bristol to Hawaii where it was assembled by Wave Marketing's crew for the event.
