Having undergone considerable rebuilding and refurbishment over the years, the Malvina House Hotel in the Falkland Islands has most recently seen the installation of Schott Solar thermal tube collectors to generate hot water from the sun.
With a pure and unpolluted environment - plus spectacular wildlife - the islands offer one of the great clean wildernesses left on the earth. As such, the hotel works, where practically possible, to ensure that its operations are environmentally friendly.
By installing the solar thermal tube collectors, the hotel anticipates that it will save up to 60 per cent of its energy costs for hot water supplies.
The high vacuum insulated and frameless units are lightweight and modular, meaning they are suitable for installation into all building designs including private households, public buildings, offices and shops. And they require less sun than might be expected.
In the UK, they are reported to work particularly efficiently in the transitional periods preceding spring and following autumn.
The Schott Solar panels were supplied by Rayotec of Sunbury, Surrey. The six Schott evacuated tube collectors were shipped to the Islands from the UK and installed by local engineers and builders.
