Building envelope specialist Prater, is in the final stages of completing the roof of Arsenal Football Club's new Emirates Stadium in Islington, North London
The stadium, built by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, will seat 60,000 supporters in a four-tier structure which reaches 41.5m from pitch level to the top of the roof support structure. Scheduled to open in time for the 2006/07 season, it sits on a 17 acre site only 500m from Arsenal's existing ground, Highbury.
Prater moved onto the site following the installation of over 3,000 tons of largely tubular steel used to support the roof, their first task being to design and install a safety net arrest and fall system fixed to steel guide ropes. Usually these nets are fixed to the steelwork, but this wasn't feasible due to aluminium soffit trays being sited between the web of the roof's steelwork.
The soffit trays - designed and manufactured by Prater - also accommodate the stadium's public address and lighting systems, the latter being recessed into the soffits.
As each section of the soffits were installed on the 27,200sq m roof, Prater fixed a traditional metal deck to the support structure over which was laid a plywood deck followed by a special grey Sarnafil single-ply membrane.
Further work involving Prater includes GRP walkways and step-overs to the roof area.
Polycarbonate sheeting was used to marry into the roof finishes and had been designed by Prater to allow for structural and thermal movements.
Prater also designed and installed the finishing bullnoses and fascias to pitch side and external elevations including the provision of all secondary steelwork.
