Shangri-La expands its Chinese presence
BY Martin Nash

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is to open the Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing and Shangri-La Hotel, Yangzhou in 2012.

The two hotels - both in Jiangsu province - will join the group's six existing hotels in the Yangtze River Delta, plus two further projects in Shanghai scheduled to open in the next two years.

The 670-room Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing, will be located in the city's Gulou District and provide views of the Xuan Wu Lake. Facilities are expected to include a rooftop restaurant with skyline views, a Chinese restaurant, a lobby lounge with lake views, an all-day dining venue and specialty restaurants.

Also on offer will be a Horizon Club executive lounge, a health club with a 25m indoor pool and spa facilities, a selection of meeting rooms and a 2,000sq m (21,528sq ft) grand ballroom.

Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, is a regional transportation hub 300km (186 miles) from Shanghai.

The 371-room Shangri-La Hotel, Yangzhou will be situated in the city's CBD and offer a Chinese restaurant specialising in the area's Huai Yang cuisine, three further restaurants and bars, a 1,540sq m (16,576sq ft) grand ballroom, a Horizon Club executive lounge and a fitness centre with a 25m indoor pool and tennis courts.

Set to the northeast of Nanjing, Yangzhou sits at the junction of the Yangtze River, the Grand Canal and the Huaihe River. The city boasts a 2,500 year history dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period and is home to more than 500 historic sites.

Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a leading Asia Pacific luxury hotel group, currently owning and/or managing 66 hotels under the deluxe Shangri-La and mid-market Traders brands.
