New fitness facilities have been unveiled at a sports complex in Victoria, the capital town of the Maltese island of Gozo, in a bid to help drive participation among local residents.

A range of new equipment has been installed as part of the scheme, which has also included the construction of toilet facilities, the installation of water and lighting systems and maintenance work.

Speaking at the official opening of the new facilities at the sports complex in Victoria, Malta's minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, said that the scheme complemented a government vision to establish Gozo as an "ecological island".

Plans for the construction of a new indoor swimming pool at the complex are currently in the development stage and are also expected to contribute to the "eco-Gozo" vision.
