Irish arts minister Martin Cullen has revealed that more than 3 million people visited cultural institutions in 2009 - an increase of nearly 23,000 compared with the previous year.

The National Gallery of Ireland, the National Library of Ireland, the National Archives, the National Concert Hall and the National Museum all reported an increase in visitor numbers over the 12-month period.

Access to a range of collections held by the National Cultural Institutions are available to visitors free of charge, while a number of educational and family- friendly events are also held throughout the year.

Cullen said: "Our museums and galleries continued to provide interesting and educational opportunities to visitors from home and abroad in what was a difficult year.

"With the re-opening of the Natural History Museum in April, and the National Concert Hall continuing to attract the very best in both national and international musical entertainment, it is expected that these visitor numbers can be maintained in 2010."
