BLUA draws up concept plans for Hangzhou Civic Sports Center

Chinese design practice Bin Lu Architecture (BLUA) has completed work on a new urban concept masterplan for the development of a new sports complex in west Hangzhou.

Plans for the 72,700sq m (782,536sq ft) Hangzhou Civic Sports Center scheme have been drawn up on behalf of Hangzhou Sports Development Group.

The development - inspired by the Olympic flame - has also involved Hangzhou Jiangnan Architectural Design Co and will involve the creation of a new synthetic ground for sports.

Two towers - 42m and 70m (138ft and 230ft) - at the centre of the site will be divided into "active" and "inactive" parts, while a 1.2m (4ft) sunken garden plaza is also planned.

Sports facilities will be housed in the lower part of the tower and the podium area, with the swimming centre on the first floor and contained within an open space.

Meanwhile, a recreation centre will be linked by the two towers to the south east and north east, with the ground floor incorporating facilities such as galleries and restaurants.

The roof will be interconnected to create a single "sports landscape", with facilities for an extensive range of activities such as basketball, volleyball and tennis on various levels.

A BLUA spokesperson said: "Our project is based on creating an urban plaza while also creating an icon for the lack of large-scale commercial facilities and distribution of leisure spaces."
