Pacific Asia Travel Association reports growth in regional arrivals

New preliminary figures from the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) have uncovered a collective 7 per cent growth in international arrivals during the first two months of 2012.

Southeast Asia reported a year-on-year inbound numbers increase of 14 per cent and 11 per cent in January and February respectively, with Singapore one of the popular destinations.

Meanwhile, international arrivals into South Asia grew nearly 10 per cent for the two-month period, with just one of the reporting destinations - the Maldives - seeing a decline.

Elsewhere, North America and Northeast Asia have witnessed an "encouraging recovery" from the "sluggish" growth in early 2011, both reporting inbound increases of 6 per cent.

PATA CEO Martin Craigs said: "Even under the current constraints of the global economy, Asia Pacific continues to produce strong performances in international travel flows.

This result, after just two months, has generated more than three million additional foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific destinations and puts the region on track to reach our forecast of 450 million arrivals for calendar year 2012."
