Image: The US is looking to grow visitor numbers

The National Tourism and Travel Strategy has been launched by the US government in order to provide a "long-term roadmap" for the future of the American tourism industry.

It is hoped the document will help the US to attract 100 million inbound visitors per year by the end of 2021, as well as creating new jobs by promoting the US as a tourist destination.

Among some of the measures contained within the new strategy is an expansion of the Visa Waiver Program, a streamlined visa application process; and enhanced airport security.

Improved visitor facilities at federally-managed locations; the development of a skilled sector workforce; and supporting small industry businesses are also proposed.

The Department of State is already working to extend the Visa Waiver Program, with Taiwan nominated for inclusion by Secretary Hillary Clinton in December 2011.

A government spokesperson said: "The Department of State will leverage its overseas presence and public diplomacy programmes to welcome more visitors to America's great destinations.

"With partners in the travel industry, perceptions of the visa process will be improved and send a positive message to welcome tourists from all over the world to come and visit America."
