The £860,000 project, at Winton Primary School in Islington, north London is the first outcome of an agreement between Corus and Morgan Sindall where the former acts as manufacturing coordinator, strategist and lead designer, and Bluestone provides construction management and building expertise.

The new, flat roofed building uses structural panels measuring up to 3.2m x 7.2m and which were manufactured offsite using structural steel sections and tubes.

The internal finish and external cladding were built-in during manufacture, with the finished panels craned into place on site. The access routes and changing rooms use a fireproof composite cladding panel system and the roof construction is built using a 120mm thick composite steel panel system.

Outside, the walls feature a cedar wood plank rainscreen for aesthetic reasons. Depending on location, the panels could be provided with almost any commonly available surface treatment. The inside wall surface finish is Colorcoat HPS200 pre-coated steel, specified with a durable finish for stairwells and entrance areas.

By using the panelling system, the shell of the building was weatherproof in only two weeks, the structure sitting on top of an existing steel framed building dating from the late 1800s.

Pupils at the school now have essential facilities for PE and recreation, as well as providing leisure facilities after school hours for the local community.

As is normal for a building of this type, the sports hall has a platform lift to provide wheelchair access for the disabled.
