Fitness just got serious in Tyne and Wear

JD Gyms used Fitness Systems to source high quality kit for its new club
JD Gyms recently opened the doors to a £1.5m 21,000sq ft club in Washington, near Sunderland. Standing out from the low cost gym crowd, JD Gyms has taken a best in class multi manufacturer approach.

The gym features state-of-the-art equipment from True, Freemotion, Force and Technogym, supplied and fitted by Fitness Systems. Membership is from just £19.99 a month.

As the reigning champions of the National Fitness Awards’ Budget Gym of the Year title, the JD Gyms chain is adding style and quality to the budget gym market. This is clearly demonstrated by its latest addition to the portfolio; JD Gyms Washington.

The Tyne and Wear club, situated seven miles west of Sunderland, opened its doors early March 2016 in a premises that was originally built as a two storey JJB club that failed to open.

The ground floor was let to discount retailer, B&M in October 2014, with the upper floor remaining empty until JD Gyms began the fit out in late 2015.

The club features over 200 pieces of the industry’s best cardio, strength and functional fitness equipment, all provided by Fitness Systems.

Working on a best in class approach as opposed to sole supplier, JD Gyms and Fitness Systems collaborated to source high quality kit from the world’s leading manufacturers.

With cardio kit including 23 True TCS600 treadmills, 10 True XCS900 cross-trainers, five FreeMotion i11 incline trainers and six Cybex total body arc trainers, to name but a few, it is clear to see how members can benefit from this unique, best in class manufacturer approach.

All Technogym and Matrix strength and resistance machines are fully JD Gyms branded, as are the 38 spin bikes to give a coordinated, premium feel.

The venue also boasts saunas, a sprint track, prowler track, tri rig and the area’s largest free weights area with over 30 benches. A large studio and spin studio play host to over 60 classes a week, all of which are included in the membership.

Fitness Systems completed the fit out over a two-week period and the site opened a week ahead of schedule for VIP previews.

Alun Peacock, managing director at JD Gyms, said: “We’ve brought a low cost gym with a difference to the North East by offering premium kit and exceptional fitness facilities on a highly affordable basis.

"Feedback and take up has been excellent so far – a gym of this caliber in the area has been a long time coming and we’re incredibly pleased with the results.

"As the exclusive UK distributor of Force, True and FreeMotion, the team at Fitness Systems have enabled us to seamlessly deliver a world class gym floor for our members to enjoy for years to come.”
