The University of Brighton is installing one of the UK's largest solar thermal systems at Hillbrow, its swimming pool in Eastbourne.

The town claims one of the best sunshine records in Britain and the installation from Riomay Solar Heating is expected to save the university around 40 tonnes of carbon monoxide (CO2) each year. This equates - over the life expectancy of the system of more than 35 years - to in excess of 1500 tonnes in total.

The array of 60 evacuated glass-tube panels, spanning a gross area of 180sq m., is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and the company says that the panels will produce more energy per square metre per year than any other commercially available panel in the world.

The installation will not only reduce carbon emissions but could also provide a valuable education resource to students at the university and at schools throughout East Sussex.

A display unit will be erected in the foyer of the complex and will monitor the performance of the solar equipment. The data gathered could be fed through to university and school computer systems to enable students to study the effectiveness of renewable energy.

Elsewhere, it has been announced that Riomay has been short listed for a Green Energy Award.

The company's solar installation at the Bridge of Don Academy in Aberdeen has been nominated in the Best Community Initiative category of the Scottish Green Energy Awards. Winners of the Awards will be named at a ceremony in Edinburgh on 8 December.
